  • Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or not recognized by Windows or other programs.
  • You receive various disc write error messages.

  • You experience issues with third-party programs that you use to write data to the disc.
  • You cannot read the disc in all versions of Windows.
  • You cannot read the disc, or some files on the disk, by using an MP3 player.
  • When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost.
  • Recording files to the disc is inconsistent.
  • The disc recording operation is consistently unsuccessful.
  • You experience one of the following errors:
    • There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable CD into drive.
    • Drive not accessible, incorrect function
    • Error Deleting File or Folder.
      Cannot delete file name. Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive.
    • SCSI error: No SCSI host adapter found
    • Error: Can not complete the CD writing wizard.
    • The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31).
    • A driver for this device was not required, and has been disabled (Code 32 or Code 31).
    • Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)
    • An 'error code 39' error message.
    • Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

This problem is caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To fix the problem, you have to use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries. To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator.


  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
    Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
    Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  10. Exit Registry Editor.
  11. Restart the computer.

Method 1: Confirm that your CD-R or CD-RW is listed in the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)

See the HCL to make sure that your CD-R drive or your CD-RW drive is compatible with Windows XP. Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for the brand and the model of the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive.

If your device is listed on the HCL list, continue to Method 2.

Method 2: Check the Device Manager to see whether the device is missing

To open the device manager, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysm.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

Method 3: Check the device manager to see whether there is an issue with the driver

If the device manager indicates there is an issue with the device, you may be able to resolve the issue by uninstalling and then reinstalling it. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
  3. Click the drive that uses the driver that you want to remove.
  4. On the Action menu, click Uninstall.
    When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
  5. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.

Method 4: Use a third-party program

If you are using the built-in recording feature of Windows XP, you may be able to work around the issue by using a third-party CD recording program.
Note Some third-party programs may experience issues with specific drives. Additionally, specific versions of the third-party program may have known issues. If you already use a third-party program, contact the manufacture to find out whether there are known issues or updates that you should be aware of. Method 5: Change the CD or DVD drive from programmed input/output (PIO) mode to direct memory access (DMA) mode

To change from PIO mode to DMA mode, open Control Panel, and then follow these steps to configure the DMA/PIO settings for a controller:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
  3. Right-click the controller that you want to configure DMA/PIO settings for, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
  5. In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.

Step 2 - Install Your Driver

After you download your new driver, then you have to install it. To install a driver in Windows, you will need to use a built-in utility called Device Manager. It allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.

How to Open Device Manager

How to Install drivers using Device Manager

  1. Locate the device and model that is having the issue and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
